Wildlife Rehabilitation

Wildlife Rehabilitation at Dayton South Veterinar raccoon_wbg.jpg y Clinic

Sometimes wild animals are in need of human assistance. A licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator is permitted by Ohio law to provide care for orphaned, injured and abandoned native Ohio wildlife.

Some of the animals which help has been provided to in the past include; deer, foxes, raccoons, bobcats, black bears, rabbits, squirrels, weasels, opossums, woodchucks, mink, bats, coyotes, waterfowl, songbirds, and raptors.

Reasons animals are admitted range from having been displaced from their homes, separated from their family, hit by a car, to poisoning.

What You Can do to Prevent Wildlife Orphans

Humans can never equal the care wild animals provide for their young. A young animal should only be removed from the wild after all avenues to reunite it with an adult animal have been explored and exhausted.

  • Check for nests before cutting down a tree or clearing brush in the Spring. It is best to cut trees and clear brush in the Fall after nesting season is over.

  • Place caps on all chimneys, vents and window wells to prevent animals form nesting there.

  • Keep pets under control so they do not injure wild animals or themselves.

  • Educate children to respect wild animals and their habitat, and not to try and catch or harass them.

  • Exercise caution when driving and watch the roadsides for wild animals, especially at dawn and dusk.

  • Conserve habitat for wildlife.

If an animal is found in distress, using gloves, please contain the animal, if possible, in a box or pet carrier. YOUR SAFTEY FIRST! To reduce stress to the animal, please keep it warm, dark, and quiet until further assistance is provided. There is no fee to admit wildlife, only the request that the animal is brought to our clinic. Please call ahead prior to bringing any wildlife in as we may direct you to another rehabber. Donations are greatly appreciated.
